Description
Chrono Cross is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the PlayStation console. It was released in Japan on November 18, 1999, and in North America on August 15, 2000.
Chrono Cross is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Chrono Trigger, although the two games have different stories and characters. Set in a parallel world to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross follows the story of Serge, a young boy who finds himself caught in a dimensional shift and embarks on a journey to uncover the truth behind his existence and the mysteries of the world.
The gameplay in Chrono Cross revolves around exploration, turn-based combat, and a unique "Element" system. Players traverse a 3D world, encountering non-player characters, engaging in battles, and solving puzzles. Combat is initiated by encountering enemies on the field, leading to turn-based battles where players can utilize a variety of character-specific abilities and magical spells called Elements. Elements are assigned to each character and can be customized and combined to create powerful combo attacks.
Chrono Cross features a large cast of playable characters, each with their own personalities, backstories, and combat styles. The game also employs a branching storyline with multiple possible endings, influenced by player choices and actions throughout the game. The soundtrack, composed by Yasunori Mitsuda, is highly regarded and considered one of the highlights of the game.
Upon release, Chrono Cross received critical acclaim for its deep storyline, complex characters, innovative gameplay mechanics, and stunning visuals. It is often praised for its musical score, intricate plot, and the depth of its world-building. Chrono Cross is considered one of the standout RPGs on the PlayStation console and has gained a dedicated fanbase over the years.
