Final Fantasy VII is a role-playing video game developed and published by Square (now Square Enix) for the PlayStation console. It was released in Japan on January 31, 1997, and in North America on September 7, 1997.

Regarded as one of the most iconic and influential games of all time, Final Fantasy VII tells the story of Cloud Strife, a former member of an elite mercenary group called SOLDIER, as he joins a rebel organization known as AVALANCHE to fight against the corrupt Shinra Electric Power Company. Cloud becomes involved in a much larger conflict that revolves around the planet's life force, known as the Lifestream, and the ancient entity known as Sephiroth.

The gameplay of Final Fantasy VII combines exploration, turn-based combat, and character customization. Players navigate through pre-rendered environments, engage in random and story-driven battles, and interact with non-player characters to progress the narrative. Battles are turn-based, with characters using various weapons, magic spells, and Limit Breaks (powerful special attacks) to defeat enemies. The game features a unique Materia system, allowing players to customize their characters' abilities and magic spells by equipping them with Materia orbs.

Final Fantasy VII features a deep and emotionally charged storyline, memorable characters, and a richly detailed world. It was lauded for its stunning cinematic cutscenes, which were groundbreaking for their time, as well as its diverse gameplay mechanics. The game's soundtrack, composed by Nobuo Uematsu, is highly regarded and includes iconic tracks such as the main theme "Aerith's Theme" and the battle theme "One-Winged Angel."

Upon release, Final Fantasy VII received critical acclaim for its narrative depth, immersive world, and technical achievements. It sold millions of copies worldwide and played a significant role in popularizing the Final Fantasy series in the West. The game has since become a beloved classic and has had a lasting impact on the RPG genre and the gaming industry as a whole. It has also received numerous spin-offs, a film sequel, and a highly anticipated remake released in multiple parts for modern consoles.
