"Phantom Brave" is a tactical role-playing game developed by Nippon Ichi Software for the PlayStation 2. It was originally released in Japan in 2004 and later in North America and Europe in 2004 and 2005, respectively. The game was later ported to other platforms such as the Wii, PlayStation Portable, and PC.

In "Phantom Brave," players assume the role of Marona, a young girl who has the ability to communicate with phantoms, spirits of deceased individuals. The game takes place on the island of Ivoire, where Marona takes on various jobs as a "Chroma," essentially a freelance adventurer, in order to support herself and her guardian, Ash, a phantom who accompanies her. The game features a gridless battle system, where characters move freely across the battlefield rather than being confined to grid spaces.

One of the unique features of "Phantom Brave" is its "Confine" system, where Marona can summon and confine phantoms to inanimate objects on the battlefield, such as rocks or trees, temporarily bringing them into battle as allies. This adds a layer of strategy to battles, as players must consider which phantoms to summon and where to place them for optimal effectiveness.

"Phantom Brave" received positive reviews from critics for its innovative gameplay mechanics, charming characters, and engaging story. However, some critics noted its steep learning curve and complex mechanics, which may be daunting to newcomers to the tactical RPG genre. Despite this, it has developed a dedicated fanbase and is considered one of the standout titles in Nippon Ichi Software's library of strategy RPGs.
